Consulting Resources

IUCG members have gained experience in top consulting and corporate strategy roles and are committed to helping fellow IUCGers and UMass students break into the industry.

What is consulting?

Consulting is the practice of providing expert advice to businesses, organizations, or individuals to help them solve complex problems, improve efficiency, and achieve their strategic goals. Consultants analyze data, conduct research, and develop recommendations to drive impactful change. Consulting can span various industries, including strategy, management, technology, finance, and operations.

Am I a good fit for a career in consulting?

If you enjoy problem-solving, working in teams, and tackling complex business challenges, consulting could be a great fit for you. Successful consultants are curious, adaptable, analytical, and strong communicators. They thrive in fast-paced environments and are comfortable working with data, structuring problems, and presenting recommendations to clients.

If you're unsure whether consulting is right for you, IUCG offers real project experience and educational events to help you explore the field and develop the necessary skills. No prior experience is needed—just a willingness to learn and a passion for solving problems!

How can I gain consulting experience?

One of the best ways to gain hands-on consulting experience is by joining IUCG. Our members work on real consulting projects for clients, allowing them to develop problem-solving, communication, and analytical skills in a professional setting. Additionally, we host educational events open to the entire UMass community, where students can learn about case interviews, industry trends, and essential consulting skills.

What are consulting interviews?

Consulting interviews typically consist of two main parts: a case interview and a behavioral interview. The case interview assesses your ability to think critically, structure problems, and communicate solutions by solving a real or hypothetical business challenge. The behavioral interview focuses on your experiences, leadership skills, and teamwork abilities. Preparing for consulting interviews involves practicing case frameworks, improving mental math, and refining storytelling techniques for behavioral questions.
